This preface was not written by Jeremias,\u003cbr\u003ebut was added by the seventy interpreters, to give the reader to\u003cbr\u003eunderstand upon what occasion the Lamentations were published.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:1. How doth the city sit solitary that was full of people! how\u003cbr\u003eis the mistress of the Gentiles become as a widow: the princes of\u003cbr\u003eprovinces made tributary!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:2. Beth. Weeping, she hath wept in the night, and her tears are on her\u003cbr\u003echeeks: there is none to comfort her among all them that were dear to\u003cbr\u003eher: all her friends have despised her, and are become her enemies.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:3. Ghimel. Juda hath removed her dwelling place, because of her\u003cbr\u003eaffliction, and the greatness of her bondage; she hath dwelt among the\u003cbr\u003enations, and she hath found no rest; all her persecutors have taken her\u003cbr\u003ein the midst of straits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:4. Daleth. The ways of Sion mourn, because there are none that come to\u003cbr\u003ethe solemn feast: all her gates are broken down; her priests sigh; her\u003cbr\u003evirgins are in affliction; and she is oppressed with bitterness.  1:5.\u003cbr\u003eHe. Her adversaries are become her lords; her enemies are enriched;\u003cbr\u003ebecause the Lord hath spoken against her for the multitude of her\u003cbr\u003einiquities; her children are led into captivity, before the face of the\u003cbr\u003eoppressor.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:6. Vau. And from the daughter of Sion, all her beauty is departed; her\u003cbr\u003eprinces are become like rams that find no pastures; and they are gone\u003cbr\u003eaway without strength before the face of the pursuer.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:7. Jerusalem hath remembered the days of her affliction, and\u003cbr\u003eprevarication of all her desirable things which she had from the days of\u003cbr\u003eold, when her people fell in the enemy's hand, and there was no helper;\u003cbr\u003ethe enemies have seen her, and have mocked at her sabbaths.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:8. Heth. Jerusalem hath grievously sinned, therefore is she become\u003cbr\u003eunstable; all that honoured her, have despised her, because they have\u003cbr\u003eseen her shame; but she sighed, and turned backward.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:9. Teth. Her filthiness is on her feet, and she hath not remembered\u003cbr\u003eher end; she is wonderfully cast down, not having a comforter: behold, O\u003cbr\u003eLord, my affliction, because the enemy is lifted up.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:10. Jod. The enemy hath put out his hand to all her desirable things:\u003cbr\u003efor she hath seen the Gentiles enter into her sanctuary, of whom thou\u003cbr\u003egavest commandment that they should not enter into thy church.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:11. Caph. All her people sigh, they seek bread: they have given all\u003cbr\u003etheir precious things for food to relieve the soul: see, 0 Lord, and\u003cbr\u003econsider, for I am become vile. 1:12. Lamed. O all ye that pass by the\u003cbr\u003eway, attend, and see if there be any sorrow like to my sorrow: for he\u003cbr\u003ehath made a vintage of me, as the Lord spoke in the day of his fierce\u003cbr\u003eanger.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:13. Mem. From above he hath sent fire into my bones, and hath\u003cbr\u003echastised me: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back:\u003cbr\u003ehe hath made me desolate, wasted with sorrow all the day long.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:14. Nun. The yoke of my iniquities hath watched: they are folded\u003cbr\u003etogether in his hand, and put upon my neck: my strength is weakened: the\u003cbr\u003eLord hath delivered me into a hand, out of which I am not able to rise.\u003cbr\u003e1:15. Samech. The Lord hath taken away all my mighty men out of the\u003cbr\u003emidst of me: he hath called against me the time, to destroy my chosen\u003cbr\u003emen: the Lord hath trodden the winepress for the virgin daughter of\u003cbr\u003eJuda.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:16. Ain. Therefore do I weep, and my eyes run down with water: because\u003cbr\u003ethe comforter, the relief of my soul, is far from me: my children are\u003cbr\u003edesolate because the enemy hath prevailed.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:17. Phe. Sion hath spread forth her hands, there is none to comfort\u003cbr\u003eher: the Lord hath commanded against Jacob, his enemies are round about\u003cbr\u003ehim: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:18. Sade. The Lord is just, for I have provoked his mouth to wrath:\u003cbr\u003ehear, I pray you, all ye people, and see my sorrow: my virgins, and my\u003cbr\u003eyoung men are gone into captivity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:19.
