The vision of Abdias. Thus saith the Lord God to Edom: We have\u003cbr\u003eheard a rumour from the Lord, and he hath sent an ambassador to the\u003cbr\u003enations: Arise, and let us rise up to battle against him.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:2. Behold I have made thee small among the nations: thou art exceeding\u003cbr\u003econtemptible.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:3. The pride of thy heart hath lifted thee up, who dwellest in the\u003cbr\u003eclefts of the rocks, and settest up thy throne on high: who sayest in\u003cbr\u003ethy heart: Who shall bring me down to the ground?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:4. Though thou be exalted as an eagle, and though thou set thy nest\u003cbr\u003eamong the stars: thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:5. If thieves had gone in to thee, if robbers by night, how wouldst\u003cbr\u003ethou have held thy peace? would they not have stolen till they had\u003cbr\u003eenough? if the grapegatherers had come in to thee, would they not have\u003cbr\u003eleft thee at the least a cluster?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:6. How have they searched Esau, how have they sought out his hidden\u003cbr\u003ethings?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:7. They have sent thee out even to the border: all the men of thy\u003cbr\u003econfederacy have deceived thee: the men of thy peace have prevailed\u003cbr\u003eagainst thee: they that eat with thee shall lay snares under thee: there\u003cbr\u003eis no wisdom in him.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:8. Shall not I in that day, saith the Lord, destroy the wise out of\u003cbr\u003eEdom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:9. And thy valiant men of the south shall be afraid, that man may be\u003cbr\u003ecut off from the mount of Esau.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:10. For the slaughter, and for the iniquity against thy brother Jacob,\u003cbr\u003econfusion shall cover thee, and thou shalt perish for ever.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:11. In the day when thou stoodest against him, when strangers carried\u003cbr\u003eaway his army captive, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast\u003cbr\u003elots upon Jerusalem: thou also wast as one of them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:12. But thou shalt not look on in the day of thy brother, in the day\u003cbr\u003eof his leaving his country: and thou shalt not rejoice over the children\u003cbr\u003eof Juda, in the day of their destruction: and thou shalt not magnify thy\u003cbr\u003emouth in the day of distress.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThou shalt not look, etc... or, thou shouldst not, etc. It is a\u003cbr\u003ereprehension for what they had done, and at the same time a declaration\u003cbr\u003ethat these things should not pass unpunished.-Ibid. Thou shalt not\u003cbr\u003emagnify thy mouth... That is, thou shalt not speak arrogantly against\u003cbr\u003ethe children of Juda as insulting them in their distress.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:13. Neither shalt thou enter into the gate of my people in the day of\u003cbr\u003etheir ruin: neither shalt thou also look on in his evils in the day of\u003cbr\u003ehis calamity: and thou shalt not be sent out against his army in the day\u003cbr\u003eof his desolation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:14. Neither shalt thou stand in the crossways to kill them that flee:\u003cbr\u003eand thou shalt not shut up them that remain of him in the day of\u003cbr\u003etribulation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:15. For the day of the Lord is at hand upon all nations: as thou hast\u003cbr\u003edone, so shall it be done to thee: he will turn thy reward upon thy own\u003cbr\u003ehead.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:16. For as you have drunk upon my holy mountain, so all nations shall\u003cbr\u003edrink continually: and they shall drink, and sup up, and they shall be\u003cbr\u003eas though they were not.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:17. And in mount Sion shall be salvation, and it shall be holy, and\u003cbr\u003ethe house of Jacob shall possess those that possessed them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:18. And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a\u003cbr\u003eflame, and the house of Esau stubble: and they shall be kindled in them,\u003cbr\u003eand shall devour them: and there shall be no remains of the house of\u003cbr\u003eEsau, for the Lord hath spoken it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:19. And they that are toward the south, shall inherit the mount of\u003cbr\u003eEsau, and they that are in the plains, the Philistines: and they shall\u003cbr\u003epossess the country of Ephraim, and the country of Samaria: and Benjamin\u003cbr\u003eshall possess Galaad.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:20. And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel, all the\u003cbr\u003eplaces of the Chanaanites even to Sarepta: and the captivity of\u003cbr\u003eJerusalem that is in Bosphorus, shall possess the cities of the south.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:21.
