Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on\u003cbr\u003ethe fifth day of the month, when I was in the midst of the captives by\u003cbr\u003ethe river Chobar, the heavens were opened, and I saw the visions of God.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe thirtieth year... Either of the age of Ezechiel; or, as others will\u003cbr\u003ehave it, from the solemn covenant made in the eighteenth year of the\u003cbr\u003ereign of Josias. 4 Kings 23.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:2. On the fifth day of the month, the same was the fifth year of the\u003cbr\u003ecaptivity of king Joachin,\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:3. The word of the Lord came to Ezechiel the priest the son of Buzi in\u003cbr\u003ethe land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chobar: and the hand of the Lord\u003cbr\u003ewas there upon him.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:4. And I saw, and behold a whirlwind came out of the north: and a\u003cbr\u003egreat cloud, and a fire infolding it, and brightness was about it: and\u003cbr\u003eout of the midst thereof, that is, out of the midst of the fire, as it\u003cbr\u003ewere the resemblance of amber:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:5. And in the midst thereof the likeness of four living creatures: and\u003cbr\u003ethis was their appearance: there was the likeness of a man in them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLiving creatures... Cherubims (as appears from Ecclesiasticus 49.10)\u003cbr\u003erepresented to the prophet under these mysterious shapes, as supporting\u003cbr\u003ethe throne of God, and as it were drawing his chariot. All this chapter\u003cbr\u003eappeared so obscure, and so full of mysteries to the ancient Hebrews,\u003cbr\u003ethat, as we learn from St. Jerome, (Ep. ad Paulin.,) they suffered none\u003cbr\u003eto read it before they were thirty years old.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:6. Every one had four faces, and every one four wings.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:7. Their feet were straight feet, and the sole of their foot was like\u003cbr\u003ethe sole of a calf's foot, and they sparkled like the appearance of\u003cbr\u003eglowing brass.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:8. And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four\u003cbr\u003esides: and they had faces, and wings on the four sides,\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:9. And the wings of one were joined to the wings of another. They\u003cbr\u003eturned not when they went: but every one went straight forward.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:10. And as for the likeness of their faces: there was the face of a\u003cbr\u003eman, and the face of a lion on the right side of all the four: and the\u003cbr\u003eface of an ox, on the left side of all the four: and the face of an\u003cbr\u003eeagle over all the four.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:11. And their faces, and their wings were stretched upward: two wings\u003cbr\u003eof every one were joined, and two covered their bodies:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:12. And every one of them went straight forward: whither the impulse\u003cbr\u003eof the spirit was to go, thither they went: and they turned not when\u003cbr\u003ethey went.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:13. And as for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance\u003cbr\u003ewas like that of burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of\u003cbr\u003elamps. This was the vision running to and fro in the midst of the living\u003cbr\u003ecreatures, a bright fire, and lightning going forth from the fire.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:14. And the living creatures ran and returned like flashes of\u003cbr\u003elightning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:15. Now as I beheld the living creatures, there appeared upon the\u003cbr\u003eearth by the living creatures one wheel with four faces.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:16. And the appearance of the wheels, and the work of them was like\u003cbr\u003ethe appearance of the sea: and the four had all one likeness: and their\u003cbr\u003eappearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the midst of a\u003cbr\u003ewheel.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:17. When they went, they went by their four parts: and they turned not\u003cbr\u003ewhen they went.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen they went, they went by their four parts... That is, indifferently\u003cbr\u003eto any of their sides either forward or backward: to the right or to the\u003cbr\u003eleft.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:18. The wheels had also a size, and a height, and a dreadful\u003cbr\u003eappearance: and the whole body was full of eyes round about all the\u003cbr\u003efour.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:19. And, when the living creatures went, the wheels also went together\u003cbr\u003eby them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth,\u003cbr\u003ethe wheels also were lifted up with them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:20. Withersoever the spirit went, thither as the spirit went the\u003cbr\u003ewheels also were lifted up withal, and followed it: for the spirit of\u003cbr\u003elife was in the wheels.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:21.
