The Evangelist gives us rather the pedigree of\u003cbr\u003eSt. Joseph, than that of the blessed Virgin, to conform to the custom of\u003cbr\u003ethe Hebrews, who in their genealogies took no notice of women; but as\u003cbr\u003ethey were near akin, the pedigree of the one sheweth that of the other.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:17. So all the generations from Abraham to David, are fourteen\u003cbr\u003egenerations. And from David to the transmigration of Babylon, are\u003cbr\u003efourteen generations: and from the transmigration of Babylon to Christ\u003cbr\u003eare fourteen generations.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:18. Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother\u003cbr\u003eMary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found\u003cbr\u003ewith child, of the Holy Ghost.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:19. Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing\u003cbr\u003epublicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:20. But while he thought on these things, behold the Angel of the Lord\u003cbr\u003eappeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to\u003cbr\u003etake unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of\u003cbr\u003ethe Holy Ghost.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:21. From these words Helvidius\u003cbr\u003eand other heretics most impiously inferred that the blessed Virgin Mary\u003cbr\u003ehad other children besides Christ; but St.  Jerome shews, by divers\u003cbr\u003eexamples, that this expression of the Evangelist was a manner of\u003cbr\u003espeaking usual among the Hebrews, to denote by the word until, only what\u003cbr\u003eis done, without any regard to the future. Thus it is said, Genesis 8. 6\u003cbr\u003eand 7, that Noe sent forth a raven, which went forth, and did not return\u003cbr\u003etill the waters were dried up on the earth. That is, did not return any\u003cbr\u003emore. Also Isaias 46. 4, God says: I am till you grow old.
