It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things\u003cbr\u003efrom the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent\u003cbr\u003eTheophilus,\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:4. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest\u003cbr\u003enamed Zachary, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters\u003cbr\u003eof Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOf the course of Abia... that is, of the rank of Abia, which word in the\u003cbr\u003eGreek is commonly put for the employment of one day: but here for the\u003cbr\u003efunctions of a whole week. For, by the appointment of David, 1 Par. 24.,\u003cbr\u003ethe descendants from Aaron were divided into twenty-four families, of\u003cbr\u003ewhich the eighth was Abia, from whom descended this Zachary, who at this\u003cbr\u003etime was in the week of his priestly functions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:6. And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments\u003cbr\u003eand justifications of the Lord without blame.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:7. And they had no son, for that Elizabeth was barren: and they both\u003cbr\u003ewere well advanced in years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:8. And it came to pass, when he executed the priestly function in the\u003cbr\u003eorder of his course before God,\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:9. According to the custom of the priestly office, it was his lot to\u003cbr\u003eoffer incense, going into the temple of the Lord.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:10. And all the multitude of the people was praying without, at the\u003cbr\u003ehour of incense.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:11. And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the\u003cbr\u003eright side of the altar of incense.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:12. And Zachary seeing him, was troubled: and fear fell upon him.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:13. But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is\u003cbr\u003eheard: and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son.  And thou shalt\u003cbr\u003ecall his name John.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:14. And thou shalt have joy and gladness: and many shall rejoice in\u003cbr\u003ehis nativity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:15. For he shall be great before the Lord and shall drink no wine nor\u003cbr\u003estrong drink: and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his\u003cbr\u003emother's womb.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:16. And he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord\u003cbr\u003etheir God.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:17. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias: that\u003cbr\u003ehe may turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children and the\u003cbr\u003eincredulous to the wisdom of the just, to prepare unto the Lord a\u003cbr\u003eperfect people.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:18. And Zachary said to the angel: Whereby shall I know this?  For I\u003cbr\u003eam an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:19. And the angel answering, said to him: I am Gabriel, who stand\u003cbr\u003ebefore God and am sent to speak to thee and to bring thee these good\u003cbr\u003etidings.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:20. And behold, thou shalt be dumb and shalt not be able to speak\u003cbr\u003euntil the day wherein these things shall come to pass: because thou hast\u003cbr\u003enot believed my words, which shall be fulfilled in their time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:21. And the people were waiting for Zachary: and they wondered that he\u003cbr\u003etarried so long in the temple.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:22. And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they\u003cbr\u003eunderstood that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he made signs to\u003cbr\u003ethem and remained dumb.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:23. And it came to pass, after the days of his office were\u003cbr\u003eaccomplished, he departed to his own house.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:24. And after those days, Elizabeth his wife conceived and hid herself\u003cbr\u003efive months, saying:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:25. Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he hath had\u003cbr\u003eregard to take away my reproach among men.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:26. And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a\u003cbr\u003ecity of Galilee, called Nazareth,\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:27. To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house\u003cbr\u003eof David: and the virgin's name was Mary.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:28.
