Scientists\u003cbr\u003ehave made substantial advances in understanding the pathogenesis of HIV infection, and in the\u003cbr\u003etreatment and monitoring of HIV disease. These advances formed the basis for recommending\u003cbr\u003epotent combination antiretroviral therapeutic regimens that maximally suppress viral replication,\u003cbr\u003eand that are associated with significant reductions in HIV-related morbidity and mortality.\u003cbr\u003eHowever, as with research in many other diseases, studies in children have lagged behind those\u003cbr\u003ein adults, and gender differences often go unappreciated.
