Some\u003cbr\u003econjecture that Electa might be the name of a family, or of a particular\u003cbr\u003echurch; but the general opinion is, that it is the proper name of a\u003cbr\u003elady, so eminent for her piety and great charity, as to merit this\u003cbr\u003eEpistle from St. John.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:2. For the sake of the truth which dwelleth in us and shall be with us\u003cbr\u003efor ever.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:3. Grace be with you, mercy and peace from God the Father and from\u003cbr\u003eChrist Jesus the Son of the Father: in truth and charity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:4. I was exceeding glad that I found of thy children walking in truth,\u003cbr\u003eas we have received a commandment from the Father.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:5. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as writing a new commandment to\u003cbr\u003ethee, but that which we have had from the beginning, that we love one\u003cbr\u003eanother.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:6. And this is charity: That we walk according to his commandments.\u003cbr\u003eFor this is the commandment that, as you have heard from the beginning,\u003cbr\u003eyou should walk in the same:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:7. For many seducers are gone out into the world who confess not that\u003cbr\u003eJesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a seducer and an antichrist.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:8. Look to yourselves, that you lose not the things which you have\u003cbr\u003ewrought: but that you may receive a full reward.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:9. Whosoever revolteth and continueth not in the doctrine of Christ\u003cbr\u003ehath not God. He that continueth in the doctrine, the same hath both the\u003cbr\u003eFather and the Son.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:10. If any man come to you and bring not this doctrine, receive him\u003cbr\u003enot into the house nor say to him: God speed you.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNor say to him, God speed you... This admonition is in general, to\u003cbr\u003eforewarn the faithful of the dangers which may arise from a familiarity\u003cbr\u003ewith those who have prevaricated and gone from the true faith, and with\u003cbr\u003esuch as teach false doctrine. But this is not forbidding a charity for\u003cbr\u003eall men, by which we ought to wish and pray for the eternal salvation of\u003cbr\u003eevery one, even of our enemies.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:11. For he that saith unto him: God speed you, communicateth with his\u003cbr\u003ewicked works.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1:12.
