Cage has developed a sense of family and belonging. He fights at the tournament with this in his heart and loses, despite being the greater contestant. But this exposes him. Jilly attempts to finish the job she started. Omar’s position as a royal Ksoni becomes tenuous. He is imprisoned for training Cage. Calan and his family are forced to flee. Cage is wounded and must abandon his new family. He finds himself alone, wounded and on the run. His adopted family’s long held desire for Calan to become a student is crippled by a need for practical survival.
