They become inseparable and spend almost all their time on the streets together. Angie is two years younger than Sera and he becomes her de facto big brother. Their friendship develops over the next few years until Sera’s attentions become more amorous.

The relationship does not have time to flourish because, at eighteen years of age, Sera kills a man while defending Angie’s honour. He is sent to prison for manslaughter. There, an inmate teaches him how to play guitar. On his release from prison, Sera becomes an itinerant musician; plying his trade in bars, and on the streets throughout France and Spain. He accepts his new life and does not return to Naples.

While Sera is in prison, Angie is ‘discovered’ by a modelling agent. She becomes a successful fashion model in magazines and billboards. Nineteen years later, while on assignment in the Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid, she stops to listen to a busker and is taken by the song he sings. When she finishes her work, she sees the busker approach her. As he hands her a bunch of roses, she recognises her childhood friend. Angie accompanies Sera to his performance in a bar that night, and decides to accompany him to other performances in Cordoba and Barcelona. She also invites him to accompany her to her next assignment in Portofino, and their rollercoaster journey of rediscovery begins.
Their travel takes them to visit the delights of the Mesquite in Cordoba, the Alhambra in Granada, and progresses to Sera’s performance at Montjuic in Barcelona. The passion and romance engendered by these exotic settings rekindles their relationship. It evolves into romance as they search for what might have been. Their bonding is gathering momentum, but new events place it in danger of falling apart. At Sera’s performance in Montjuic, friends from Angie’s modelling world surprise her. They are travelling to Lake Como to attend a party and offer Angie and Sera passage to Italy. Sera learns about Angie’s new life while they travel across France. He grows disenchanted with her friends’ pretentious ways. While she has been her old self throughout their travel together, he is now surprised at how easily she reverts to her new life.

Their journey is now interspersed with angst while they attempt to keep their growing relationship on track. While Angie has come to terms with his life, Sera is at odds with the lifestyles of her friends. The unrest culminates at the party in Lake Como when Sera physically assaults one of Angie’s friends. After initial conflict, they spend a day on the lake together. From there, Sera accompanies Angie to her assignment in Portofino and their relationship appears to reignite as they spend a day discovering Santa Margherita and Camogli. However, Angie’s agent makes it known he is displeased with Sera’s appearance. While Angie is working, her agent initiates another chain of events by insulting Sera. Sera climbs to a glorious setting on top of the hill and reflects on events. While he looks over the Mediterranean, it reminds him of the Bay of Naples. His time with Angie, and the setting, makes him homesick. He decides to leave her behind and return to his home in Naples.

In Naples, Sera reunites with his family. He now sees his parents with adult eyes. No longer is his father an ogre. He has suffered a stroke which has confined him to a wheelchair. Sera’s mother now has the role of carer in a home where peace reigns. Sera’s younger siblings have families of their own, and he pictures a life that might have been his if he had not stayed away. He settles down and starts performing in bars around Naples. Angie turns up at one of his performances and they reflect on the events that formed their journey. They conclude there is no reason they cannot continue with their individual careers while enjoying the life that Naples has to offer.
