2940154058640
Face Blind

Considering themselves protected by their establishment backgrounds, Imogene and Tristram, although laissez-faire in attitude about each other, accept the mores of their class. Into their lives comes Estera, not one of them, but they form attachments. Privilege protects them from debasement ruining their cosy, precocious explorations of each other. Estera, never fully comfortable with this, is influenced by Imogene. However, first in their teenage years by Ordie, later at University with Joe, their lives change as sexism and abuse, blood and violence, alongside a remerging xenophobia, dismantles their perfect Idyll. Estera attempts to lift Imogene from this but saving Tristram becomes a struggle with her own desires. Through a hidden past, Maya, a small face blind girl, and her dysfunctional family, might come the means to break the cycle of dissipated self-indulgence.
This novel, dark and gritty with humour a light in the dread, is a novel of realism about search for love in a time of violence unleashed creating inward-looking for protection. For Estera fractious attitudes of selfish protectionism is not the answer. She battles her own weaknesses, isolation from support and exposure to disappointment against the crassness, misdirecting populism, swamping her. Tristram has the foibles of a Samson, Imogene that of an unbalanced ice-queen, but Estera has all the qualities of the biblical Esther. How these three mesh is like a net to drag them down into the depths or, perhaps, lift them up into the light.
