2940157056094
The Apocalyptic Witness
We live today in urgent and fearful times. There is a pervasive feeling that we are on the brink of world nuclear holocaust to which we are powerless to respond. I would like to suggest that there is a dynamic and ever-present power, to be found in the roots of Quakerism and its forerunners which is capable of transforming lives and nations in an explosion of spiritual activism of immediate value for our own times. That power I call the apocalyptic witness.

The value, for modem Quakers, of wrestling with the meaning and impact of apocalypticism is found, I believe, in its radical interpretation of history, that God is the Lord of history0, and ultimately oversees its future. Living, as we do, in the nuclear age, we cannot afford to overlook its importance. Apocalyptic vision, as a genre, and that of the last book of the Bible in particular, which meant so much to George Fox, embodies a view of history which is encapsulated in the salvific moment rather than moving only on a time continuum. The apocalyptic seer finds the "end times" (i.e., the moral and temporal culmination of history) present in every moment. Each decision we make, each day of our lives has critical consequence for the world community. We cannot coast, we cannot calculate for the long-term cumulative effects of a program of reform; we cannot equivocate about lesser evils and greater goods as secular culture defines those. Instead, we must act urgently, foolishly, precipitously in recognition of the immediate presence of the Kingdom of God.

How can this vision be recovered? By responding to the radical call to live a life of faith and witness in the face of impending world catastrophe. A review of the activities of the religious movements which preceded the time of George Fox and his revelations concerning Jesus, coupled with an understanding of apocalypticism1 sheds light on the relationship of the life and message of George Fox and Quakers to that call. In that light, this pamphlet invites response.
