2940158240164
O Death where is your thy sting, O Grave where is your victory - Resurrection Series - VOL 2
This article was a homily delivered by Father Matthew the Poor (Abouna Matta El Meskeen) in January 1973, at St. Macarius Church at the monastery, at the burial of , Abouna Isaiah, a monk who was one of his dearest disciples who died in a road accident.
The article reflects a live example, a Christian man, who is so sensitive to his human relations with people, and how he is facing a big loss, putting the word of the Lord and His promise above seen events, with great faith and patience.
The article explain why because of sin in the past, the curse of death reigned over the entire earth, so not a living soul on earth escaped death, death outside is and inside us.
But as the scripture says in the Epistle to the Romans "Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned...death reigned" (Rom 5-12:14).
It is to that purpose, that the Son of God descended from heaven and took a sinless body. Thus our flesh was liberated from the power of death; but to destroy death in our flesh, He had to die and rise in order to crush its power and dispel forever the horror of its fear.
By death Jesus trampled on death for us, and on those in the graves he conferred life eternal.
After He raised Lazarus from the dead, Jesus told Martha: "I am the resurrection and the life...whoever lives and believes in me, shall never die.
The mystery of Christ and Christianity is highly concentrated in these words.
Christ is himself life eternal; and who would die if he held fast to life?
Did not Christ say: "He who eats me shall live by me" (John 6-57)?
Christ destroyed death in the soul of man and replaced it with the spirit of resurrection.
The author also explained the determination of man's lifetime.
Abouna ended his words saying:"How then could we say, that our beloved man has died, and begin to mourn his death? Wouldn't it be better to celebrate a requiem mass for the repose of his soul and to rejoice, because our beloved one is w far happier than he ever was.
This homily has helped people overcome the difficulty of losing those who are close to them.
