{"product_id":"9780648043980","title":"The Perpetual Refugee: Images of a Holocaust Child","description":"This is the story of a foreign child's images of life. They are the images of a child who was born into the worst case of genocide in the history of the Western World. Six million Jews and one and a half million Jewish children lost their lives across Europe. Somehow the author's family survived. The experience of life saving medical treatment by the Germans was an incredible piece of reconciliation and love. \"His triumph over repeated terrible misfortunes is told here in an inspirational manner, and ought to be a positive lesson for everyone in adversity. He has made the world a better place.\" Survival is a theme which runs through the book. His mother, pregnant with Paul, was bound for Auschwitz and certain death. She seized the opportunity to join another line and was sent to a forced labour camp. Against all odds she and Paul's older brother and Paul not only survived but were eventually re-united with his father, one of the few survivors of Mauthausen. The theme of identity and fitting into a strange new society dominate a number of these stories. They are written as 'discontinuous narrative' taking a variety of issues from his life. \"The Perpetual Refugee is written to emphasise that however secular our world has become, we are all 'spiritual' because we all are mind, body and emotions. The glory of music, poetry and art, no less than faith, hope, love and laughter show the profound interconnectedness of race and ethnicity, as well as the sheer hollowness of prejudice and discrimination.\" The author came to Australia at the age of 3 as a refugee from Europe, with his parents and older brother. They were Jews. Chapters on various parts of his life show how he has come to terms with his past, demons of his coped with the diagnosis of a terminal illness and through meditation and an holistic approach and at times unorthodox treatment, survived.
