{"product_id":"9780759103177","title":"Women Creating Patrilyny: Gender and Environment in West Africa","description":"Studying the Birom people of the Jos plateau of Nigeria, social anthropologist Smedley questions the idea that all patrilineal societies are patriarchal and thus uniformly oppressive to women. Although the Birom women are barred from holding high political and ritual offices, owning property, or \"from what appeared to be major decision-making roles\"; Smedley found them to view themselves as having particular rights as women and the ability to defend those rights. She also argues that the Birom women were the chief ideological defenders of the patrilineal system. She traces the gender arrangements to both ecological aspects of food cultivation and the fear of warfare and slave raiding. The fieldwork for this study was conducted in the first year of Nigerian independence, 1959-1960.
