Similarly (but more specifically), \u003cb\u003eal-Farabi\u003c\/b\u003e said that logic is the universal law of regulated thought, while revealed religion expresses truth in the symbols of a particular place and culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the 11th century, \u003cb\u003eibn Sina\u003c\/b\u003e (Avicenna) solidified Aristotle's importance in the Islamic world and said that philosophy is the \u003ci\u003eonly\u003c\/i\u003e source of knowledge -- and knowledge is the source of salvation. \u003cb\u003eAvicenna\u003c\/b\u003e said we begin with \u003ci\u003ewhat we know\u003c\/i\u003e, and proceed through a hierarchy of sciences toward \u003ci\u003ewhat we don't know\u003c\/i\u003e, culminating in \"First Philosophy.\" Avicenna famously distinguished between \u003ci\u003eessence\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eexistence\u003c\/i\u003e. This led to the philosophical concept of Necessary Existence (i.e. God). Avicenna said happiness is found not in sense perception, but in objects of the intellect; salvation involves correct habits of the soul and a primary understanding of Being -- i.e. contemplation of the purely divine.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eAl-Ghazali\u003c\/b\u003e (1058-1111) criticized Avicenna, insisting that salvation is \u003ci\u003ebeyond\u003c\/i\u003e demonstrative knowledge, and can be gained only in the \"immediate experience\" of mysticism. \u003cb\u003eIbn Rushd\u003c\/b\u003e, or \u003cb\u003eAverroes\u003c\/b\u003e (1126-1196), worked to restore the independence of philosophy, separating it from religion.
