In doing so, they have not always elected the most famous and talented men into the office, although the twenty-seven governors have been very strong men, ideally fitted to the times in which they served. We can learn much from studying the lives of our governors. Each man in his own day was the person to whom the states's residents looked for leadership, and by and large that leadership has usually been forthcoming. South Dakota has moved forward culturally, economically, and socially during the past century in part because it's chief executives have been problem solvers. Through a study of their actions, we can gain hope in facing the challenges confronting us in the closing years of the 20th century.
