9780944344767
The World to Come: From Christian Past to Global Future

Lloyd Geering observes that we have come not only to the end of the millennium, but to the end of Christendom, the dissolution of Christian orthodoxy, the failure of modernism, and the end of old mythic certainties. We are entering a new era, the global era, which is post-Christian. In The World to Come, Geering sketches his vision of a new global spirituality that incorporates the best of our legacy from the past and promotes care for all living creatures and the earth itself.

About the Author:

Lloyd Geering is Lecturer, St. Andrew's Trust for the Study of Religion and Society, and Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand. Honored as a Companion of the British Empire in 1988, he is a public figure of considerable renown in New Zealand where he is in constant demand as a lecturer and as a commentator on religion and related matters on both television and radio. In 1966, Lloyd Geering published an article on "The Resurrection of Jesus" and, in 1967, another on "The Immortality of the Soul," which together sparked a two-year public, theological controversy that culminated in charges by the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand-of which he is an ordained minister-of doctrinal error and disturbing the peace of the church. After a dramatic, two-day televised trial, the Assembly judged that no doctrinal error had been proved, dismissed the charges and declared the case close. Lloyd Geering is the author of several books, including Tomorrow's Godv (1994) and In the World Today (1988).
