9780984462889
The Algerian Affairs
With the end of World War II in Europe in May of 1945, it was then necessary for many of the servicemen who were overseas at that time to remain for occupation duties.
In The Algerian Affairs, the three officers and thirty-five enlisted men that were attached to the 15th Air Force in southern Italy were there on a security mission; therefore, the outfit was designated as the 15th Radio Security Section. They were some of the unfortunate men that were destined to stay for occupation duty while thousands of others celebrated the fact that they would soon be on their way home.
First Lt. Frank Emberling and 2nd Lt. Larry Castellano, second and third officers respectively in the Security Section, find to their surprise that they will be shipped to a most unlikely place-namely the country of Algeria in North Africa. Initially, though, their next stop is Oran, a French occupied city of 300,000 people on the Mediterranean coast.
Emberling is disappointed at not going directly home, but Castellano welcomes this change of locale as an opportunity to have the female companionship that was missing in rural southern Italy.
After both men settle in, Emberling meets a breathtakingly beautiful daughter of a displaced American and his French wife. Gabrielle Rozland is young and shy and her demure manner greatly attracts him the moment they meet. Her sister Suzanne, who is also blessed with good looks in a more seductive way, starts a torrid affair with Castellano.
Lawrence Rozland, the father of the girls, has business dealings with Ahmed Abbassi, a handsome, wealthy Arab. The intricacies of their business dealings bring Gabrielle into the picture due to Abbassi's interest in having her for a wife. This interest is interrupted by the appearance of the Americans, much to the displeasure of Gabrielle's father.
A local bar owner in the beach area where the section is stationed plays a big part in furthering the relationship between Emberling and Gabrielle. Maurice Loubet takes a great interest in what happens between the two young lovers. His close friend, Adrienne Faure, a notorious madam, joins him in his efforts to help.
Thrown into this intricate mix of affairs is Suzi Khaliffi, an exotic belly dancer who is involved with Abbassi in sexual meetings of a clandestine nature, and a high-priced call-girl named Martine. Though being minor characters in the plot, both figure prominently in the outcome of events.
