He also became famous in the late 1960s for his stories on Black revolutionaries, later incorporated into his book \u003ci\u003eBorn Black.\u003c\/i\u003e He was a founder and editorial director of \u003ci\u003eEssence\u003c\/i\u003e magazine from 1970 to 1973. \u003cbr\u003e His film career began in 1961 when he wrote and directed a documentary, \u003ci\u003eFlavio.\u003c\/i\u003e He received an Emmy Award for another documentary, \u003ci\u003eDiary of a Harlem Family,\u003c\/i\u003e in 1968. He produced and directed Hollywood films including \u003ci\u003eThe Learning Tree, Shaft, Shaft's Big Score, The Super Cops,\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eLeadbelly.\u003c\/i\u003e \u003cbr\u003e He is first and foremost a celebrated photojournalist and fine art photographer whose work, collected and exhibited worldwide, is emblematic of American culture.
