Nichols' law enforcement career began in the Tucson, Arizona Police Department. He retired as Deputy Chief from that department to accept the leadership of the Lubbock, Texas Police Department. He later retired from municipal policing to accept the challenges of a rapidly changing society by establishing the Lubbock School District Police Department. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThomas still holds that position, as well as numerous assignments on local and state boards and commissions that address the issue of crime and violence. He has published local, regional, state and national articles in journals on policing techniques and school safety, and has penned an award winning novel and short story. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA graduate of the University of Arizona, magna cum laude, the chief also graduated from the FBI National Academy, the FBI Executive Development Program, the Senior Management Institute for Police, and many other training programs on organized crime, narcotic and dangerous drug investigations, and executive protection. His experience has ranged from being a rookie jailer to administering multi-agency covert narcotic and organized crime investigations, serving at the rank of Chief for over twenty-five years, then to executive protection for heads of state. He has testified numerous times before legislative bodies on issues of crime and punishment, and was acknowledged as a criminal justice expert witness at the District Court level.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHis service to the community has ranged from serving as President of Hospice of Lubbock, President of the Rotary Club of Lubbock, and as a member of the Lubbock Symphony Board.
