The World Ahead: An Anthropologist Anticipates the Future

Pioneering anthropologist Margaret Mead often wrote about the long- range sociocultural future, developing a body of work that has come to be known as "anticipatory anthropology." Editor Textor (formerly of Yale, Harvard, and Stanford Universities) here presents 25 examples of Mead's writings felt to be most directly relevant to this anticipatory anthropology. The papers date from 1943 to 1977 and grapple with issues of urbanization, institutional changes in education, space exploration, alternatives to war, and other issues.
