For any researcher or practitionerthat wishes to understand the landscape of recent cache work, we hope that the bookwill be an ideal starting point. We also expect early-stage graduate students to benefitfrom such a synthesis lecture. The book should also serve as a good reference bookfor advanced computer architecture classes. We expect that the material here will beaccessible to both computer scientists and VLSI engineers. It is worth pointing out thatthe book is not intended as a substitute to reading relevant full papers and chasingdown older references. The book will hopefully improve one's breadth and awareness of a multitude of caching topics, while making research on a specific topic more efficient. The multi-core revolution is well under-way. The first few mainstream multi-coreprocessors appeared around 2005. Today, it is nearly impossible to buy a desktop orlaptop that has just a single core in it. The trend is obvious; the number of cores on achip will likely double every two or three years. Such processor chips will be widely usedin the high-performance computing domain: in supercomputers, servers, and high-enddesktops. Just as the volume of low-end devices (for example, smartphones) is expectedto increase, the volume of high-end devices (servers in datacenters) is also expected toincrease. The latter trend is likely because users will increasingly rely on the "cloud"for data storage and computation. For several decades, one of the key determinants of overall system performancehas been the memory hierarchy. Access to off-chip memory consumes many cycles andmany units of energy. The more data that can be accommodated and found in the cachesof a processor chip, the higher the performance and energy efficiency. This continues tobe true in the multi-core era. In fact, multi-core processors are exp
