In this issue of the Blue-Ribbon Papers, the topic is "radical interactionism," which recent emergence as an alternative perspective to conventional symbolic interactionism has sparked fierce debate among members of the interactionist's community in both North America and Europe. In the opening chapter and the one after, Athens, who named the perspective and whose work is primarily responsible for bringing it to sociologists' attention, highlights some of the fundamental differences (and similarities) between radical and symbolic interactionism, including in their progenitors, master principles, and units of analysis. In the chapters that follow, several prominent scholars, Tim Hallett, Michael A. Katovich, Gil Richard Musolf, Caroline S. Picart, and Antony J. Puddephatt as well as, two young rising stars, Matthew Gougherty and James A. Shaw, discuss this new interactionist's perspective comparing it not only to symbolic interactionism, but also with feminism, dramaturgy, critical studies, and neo-pragmatism. Without exception, these highly gifted and knowledgeable scholars found that their examination of the dynamics of human group life from the vantage point of radical interactionism led them to the discovery of new and formidable insights, which these extant perspectives keep hidden from view. In the volume's foreword, Norman K. Denzin notes that "With this volume and these exchanges, a breath of fresh air is ushered into interactionist's discourse" adding that "a new framework has arrived." Thus, it is no longer safe for sociologists to presume that "interactionism"is only shorthand for "symbolic interactionism" because henceforth, the term "interactionism" also includes "radical interactionism," and the differences between these two forms of interaction are substantial.
