Many so-called poststructuralist thinkers have turned their attention towards questions either of postcolonialism, or of cultural domination and difference. Derrida, Cixous and Lyotard all wrote specifically about colonialism and decolonisation in Algeria, and Barthes, Kristeva and Spivak have interrogated more broadly the problems of conceptualising cultural otherness, marginality or migration in a postcolonical context. For all these thinkers, however, a reflection on such questions has generated a sense of unease concerning the assumed neutrality of theoretical discourse, and the inevitable subjective or autobiographical investments of the writing self. These are also all writers who on some level theorise their own autobiographical experiences of colonialism, cultural difference and alienation, but who repeatedly question their theoretical practice and the appropriate stance of their persona within the texts. As a result, they write about problems of cultural identification and exile in the postcolonial epoch, while also conveying a sense of the instability or dislocation of the theoretical voice within their works. Poststructuralist reflections on postcolonialism thus create a certain anxiety in relation to the genre of theory itself. This book argues that this anxiety is a fruitful one, generating an unprecedented lucidity concerning the particular challenges of writing about ourselves and others at a time of postcolonial upheaval.
