9782353401048
Tall-Tale Postcards: Early Twentieth Century American Photomontages of the Unexpected

The colossal growth of the postcard industry contributed to the popularization of photography. A hugely popular genre was the fantasy postcard: collages or photomontages that were aimed at an urban public who appreciated the arabesques of art nouveau, fin-de siècle eroticism and the twists and distortions of the urban landscape. The Surrealists adored them, devoting exhibitions (at the Jeu de Paume) and books (Steidl's The Stamp of Fantasy) to them.

Far removed from this world, in the rural heart of the American Midwest, there appeared from 1908 a curious catalogue of bizarre images. Many of them were the work of William H. 'Dad' Martin of Kansas, who produced photographic postcards of breathtaking virtuosity, or of his counterpart in Wisconsin, Alfred Stanley Johnson. Their 'tall-tale postcards' featured a strictly rural imagery of giant fruit and vegetables, miraculous catches of vastly oversized fish, and huntsmen pursuing gigantic rabbits and ducks. Full of humour and wild imagination, they have been - despite their high quality - almost completely forgotten. This little book sets out to redress this unjust neglect, reproducing the photomontages created by these pioneers and their many followers, who have succeeded in keeping the genre alive to this day.

Text in English & French

Alain Weill is an archaeologist in the fields of graphic design and advertising.
