Born and raised on New York's Lower East Side, and closely identified with the city's visual iconography, Shaw shot countless cover pictures for \u003ci\u003eLife\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eLook\u003c\/i\u003e in the 1950s and 60s, and later also took the still photographs for movies that he produced himself, initially for Paul Newman on \u003ci\u003eParis Blues\u003c\/i\u003e, but most notably for movies directed by John Cassavetes, including \u003ci\u003eHusbands\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eA Woman Under the Influence\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eOpening Night\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eGloria\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eLove Streams\u003c\/i\u003e.
