"A young woman's elicit affair with a rugged ranch-hand on her father's hacienda has damning repercussions on generations to come in this labyrinthine telenovela. Despite her popularity at her father Don Severiano Alvarez's hacienda, amiable young lass Christina is banished to the city with family servant Raquela when her father discovers that she is carrying the child of his most dedicated worker. When nefarious rancher Federico Rivera discovers that Christina is no longer under the care of her father, he quickly takes advantage of the situation by arranging to rear Christina's daughter Maria del Carmen at his own hacienda, with the mother posing as young Maria's godmother and servant Raquela posing as the child's mother. Intentionally causing an accident that results in Christina losing her vision so that he may take possession of her fortune without complication, Federico raises Maria to be a beautiful young girl while Christina takes great pains to offer her daughter a good education from behind the scenes. Things get even more complicated when Federico's nephew, Carlos Manuel, comes into town, fresh from his medical studies abroad. As young Carlos matures into a handsome young doctor, his feelings for his uncle's lover Deborah Falcon enrages Federico, who does everything in his power to drive the lovers apart.
