Newton Boys

Richard Linklater directed this period crime drama about the famed bank robbers of the '20s, with a script by Linklater, Claude Stanush, and Clark Lee Walker adapted from the book by Stanush. Willis Newton (Matthew McConaughey) convinces his three brothers (Skeet Ulrich, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio) that bank robbing is not a major crime since banks are insured. Covering the years 1919 to 1924, the film details their robberies, along with Willis' affair with widowed mother Louise (Julianna Margulies). But their record of successes goes out of control in 1924 with a $3 million Chicago mail-train robbery, the greatest train heist in American history. The film displays documentary elements, including a 1980 Johnny Carson interview with the real-life Willis Newton.
