The Amazing Transplant

"Fans of the incomparable adults-only director Doris Wishman will appreciate this well-preserved print of her bizarre sex-crazed feature The Amazing Transplant. The story concerns a troubled young virgin named Arthur and the complications that arise from a penis transplant, leading to the rape and murder of pretty young girls who wear gold earrings. One of several weird, gimmick-driven softcore sex films that Wishman was responsible for in the 1970s (see also Let Me Die a Woman and Deadly Weapons), Transplant is hardly erotic, despite a wealth of full-frontal female nudity. What is maddeningly entertaining, though, is the strange, dreamlike pace, awkwardly dubbed dialogue, and overall insanity of the plot. Digitally remastered from the original 35 mm negative, the film looks great, doing justice to the loud patterns of the ladies' fashions and the garishly decorated apartments that the scenes were shot in. Theatrical trailers are included for Transplant and four other Wishman grindhouse specials that are as much fun to watch as the pictures themselves (sometimes more). For more penis-related entertainment, check out the ""Archival Short Subjects,"" a Navy sex hygiene film, and a torn and tattered print of 1952's Penis Facts, which features a narrator explaining the historical and cultural impact of the male member over a series of nude beefcake shots. A slide show of Wishman film promotional materials rounds out the program, with quaint radio advertisements for forgotten raunch epics on the soundtrack. Sleaze fans who are unfamiliar with Something Weird Video's loving treatment of long-lost smut pictures like The Amazing Transplant are encouraged to delve into their expansive catalog, and this stupefying melodrama is a fine place to start."
