NRBQ: One in a Million

"One of the many surprises on the One In A Million DVD from N.R.B.Q. is that it is presented by Boy Howdy and Creem Magazine, a cool way of getting the word out that the legendary publication is now available online. The main portion of the digital video disc was recorded live in Montreal, 1989, and features the line-up of bassist/vocalist Joey Spampinato, brilliant ""Big"" Al Anderson on guitar, Tom Staley on drums and Terry Adams, of course, on keyboards and vocals. There are nine live tracks which include the opening cover of ""I Got A Rocket In My Pocket"" to their own ""It's A Wild Weekend"" (not the 1963 hit by The Rebels ) concluding with a version of ""Shake, Rattle & Roll"" that features The dbs Peter Holsapple. Entrain's Klem Klimek shows up playing Tenor Saxophone on ""Here Comes Terry"" dressed in denim and holding a toy doll. The audio is superb while the camera work is excellent and it is great to see The Wildweed's Al Anderson cranking out some burning leads. It's just a shame they didn't go into his wonderful ""No Good To Cry"" for posterity, though he does take the vocal on ""Shake, Rattle & Roll."" The bonus tracks include 30 slide photos which have ""It's A Wild Weekend"" spinning under them and a great black & white/color video of ""Dummy,"" the title track of their 2004 CD release. That tune sounds like Willie ""Loco"" Alexander after the wild weekend and works nicely in this setting. Dave DiMartino's 1982 Creem Magazine article on the band is excerpted in the four page booklet that accompanies this release, a DVD which has all the elements of what made vinyl albums so much fun."
