Monkeybone

"Though a box-office failure of impressive proportions, Monkeybone has received a surprisingly packed DVD release, with a director's commentary, deleted scenes, and more. The film has been transferred anamorphically at 1.85:1 from a fresh print. While much of the film has a dark, low-contrast look to it, the colors are very good throughout and vivid when called for. Some sections of the movie were shot to look very dark and this comes across in the transfer. Black levels are excellent and there is equally excellent shadow detail. The film is sharp throughout, and there appear to be no artifacts (there are a couple of moments where pixellation seems to strike, but this is also deliberate, and used to maintain the PG-13 rating). The soundtrack is provided in DTS, Dolby 5.1, Dolby Surround, and French Dolby Surround. The DTS and Dolby 5.1 mixes provide a good, full-bodied experience with excellent separation and surround effects, excellent ambient work, and a nice clean bass that provides wonderful support when needed. The Dolby Surround mix is solid, without being overly brash. The French-language track has a good voice cast and good matching, though the dialogue levels are sometimes a little too high. Extras on the disc include a director's commentary from Henry Selick, 11 extended/deleted scenes with commentary from Selick, seven scenes demonstrating the animation and visual effects, three TV spots, a theatrical trailer, and a design gallery. Selick's comments indicate that he is less than satisfied with the movie."
