A farcical tour-de-force for Peter Ustinov who produced, directed, starred and wrote both the screenplay and the original stage play on which the film was based, Romanoff and Juliet is the romantic tale of the leader of a tiny European country's attempts to keep world peace by acting as a matchmaker between the daughter of a U.S. ambassador and the son of a Soviet diplomat. Concordia, his country, is so tiny that it does not appear on any maps and has so few people that all government officials have at least two jobs. But though Concordia is small, it is still a member of the United Nations and Ustinov's vote matters. It is during an important U.N. gathering that the trouble begins for the country's are deadlocked on an important vote and only Ustinov is undecided causing both the American and Soviet diplomats to launch hard-hitting campaigns to win him over. (During the U.N. voting, Ustinov provided all the voices saying "yes" or "no" in the appropriate language).
