The Monster of Highgate Ponds

In this children's fantasy, a group of British kids befriend a strange monster after it hatches from an odd Malaysian egg. Much of their time is then spent keeping the creature from the exploitative clutches of a greedy circus manager. Eventually, the monster decides to go back to its native island and as it slowly swims into the sea, the children stand ashore and bid it adieu.
