Young law school graduate Robin Weathers (Judd Nelson) manages to land a good job with a well-known, well-respected law firm owned by Craig Duncan (Darren McGavin), Phil Amos (Allan Arbus), and Roberta Winaker (Nancy Marchand). When Robin's outrageous and slightly underhanded methods become the latest courtroom gossip, he is assigned to a losing case--defending suspected murderer, Professor Douglas Benoit (John Hurt).
