The Widow of Saint-Pierre

"The critically acclaimed foreign film The Widow of Saint-Pierre is the harrowing story about murder and redemption on the small island of St. Pierre. This 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks excellent. Aside from a slight amount of grain in the image, the colors, black levels, and fleshtones all look even and well-rendered. The audio is presented in a French Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. There is a subtle use of surround sounds during many scenes with all aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music being clear and free of distortion. Also included on this disc is a Dolby Digital 2.0 mix in English, as well as French, Spanish, and English subtitles. The Widow of Saint-Pierre includes a few nice extra features, including a set of interviews with director Patrice Leconte and three of the main actors. All participants seem very intelligent and have a lot of insightful views on the making of this film. Also included on this disc is a nine-minute featurette that shows the cast and crew working on various aspects of the movie. Finally, there are three theatrical trailers: one for The Widow of Saint-Pierre and one each for the Trimark films Songcatcher and South of Heaven, West of Hell. For such a small movie, this DVD edition of The Widow of Saint-Pierre is a big-time winner."
