The First World War 1914-1918

This documentary program provides a systematic overview of the events of World War I (1914-18). As the film denotes, many regarded the so called "Great War" as the conflict to end all future wars; of course this assessment appears silly and na?ve in retrospect, though World War I did rack up far more extensive and grueling casualties than any conflict before or since, with a conservative estimate placed at around 40 million deaths. The program examines several aspects of this multi-faceted apocalyptic event, including the complex trans-national allegiances that formed, the technologies that "modernized" the conflict (such as tanks and airplanes), and the various key battles in the war. It features vintage period photographs, archival footage, and incisive commentary.
