Gewandhausorchester Leipzig/Kurt Masur: Mussorgsky/Mendelssohn

Maestro Kurt Masur made music history when, following retirement from his post as conductor (or 'kapellmeister') at Leipzig's Gewandhaus from 1970-96, he was named the first Conductor Laureate in the symphony's history. Masur then graduated to two successive posts: chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic in 1998, and principal conductor of the London Philharmonic in the fall of 2000. This classical concert film finds Masur leading the Gewandhausorchester in two performances, one of Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Symphony No. 4 in A Major and another of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
