Writer-director Louis Malle's masterpiece is a moving semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story set in German-occupied France during WWII. At a Catholic boarding school, a 12-year-old gradually becomes aware that his new friend is a Jew who is being hidden from the Nazis by the headmaster priest, leading to a heartbreaking final scene.
