"Sebastian Gutierrez's period horror film, She Creature, was originally made for the Cinemax premium cable channel as part of their ""Creature Features"" program. The five films which made up the limited series were ostensibly remakes (in name only it turns out) of five American International Pictures' B-movies from the days when they still made 'em like they meant it. The best of the bunch is without a doubt this production, which offers up some great set designs, cinematography, creature effects, and, most importantly of all, acting and writing. Gutierrez's handling of the material definitely raises this above what could have been a toss-off production. It is called She Creature after all. But the handling of the material shows that the filmmakers cared enough to make an intriguing, scary, and thoroughly entertaining monster movie. The DVD, released by Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, offers up the film in both letterboxed (1.78:1 enhanced) and full-screen (1.33:1 enhanced) aspect ratios. Both versions look fantastic, although the letterboxed format is preferred. The disc has also been equipped with a stunning and very expansive English 5.0 track, as well as a French language track. There is plenty of channel separation and the dialogue is nicely balanced and clear throughout. Multiple subtitle options are also available. The disc also comes with a commentary track with creature EFX artists Stan Winston and Shane Mahan. The track may be useful for some budding EFX technicians, but for the most part, the two (especially Winston) rarely offer up any interesting insights or ideas. Winston, in particular, comes off a bit too self-satisfied and continually makes one horrid ""joke"" after another. Perhaps he thought he was recording a commentary track for MST3000? Also included on the disc is a ridiculously short featurette, a photo gallery, and more. Regardless of the not-very entertaining commentary track, She Creature makes for splendid watching."
