Vanina Vanini

An Italian revolutionary meets a princess as he escapes his enemies by masquerading as a woman. When he is named leader of the Northern provincial rebels, the lovestruck princess leaves home to be with him. Jealous of his attention to politics rather than love, she causes him to be captured when she misleads his compatriots. When the rebel leader is sentenced to death, she goes to the Vatican in a effort to commute the sentence to life in prison. Expecting him to be grateful for her efforts on his behalf, a prison visit results in her being beaten by him with his slave chains. His less than endearing reaction ends their love affair and drives her to the sanctuary of a convent.
