Patients' rights lawyer Colette Hughes (Hilary Swank) takes the case of Eleanor Riese (Helena Bonham Carter), a mistreated psychiatric patient. Eleanor is unable to refuse the antipsychotic medication given to her after being involuntarily committed to a California mental hospital.
