On the heels of the Great War, England struggles to rebuild after the substantial losses of human life. At the heart of the national trauma lies Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young), an ordinary young maid serving an affluent London family. When Jane develops an illicit love affair with the dashing Paul Sheringham (Josh O'Connor), Jane is forced to reconcile her heart with duty as Paul prepares to wed another woman.
