"Britain's ITV television network created a small sensation in 2004, when it produced and aired the holiday special Christmas Lights. Originally intended as a one-off, stand-alone program, this comedy followed the nutty antics of Colin (Robson Green) and Howard (Mark Benton), best friends since their teenage years who married sisters and therefore became suburban brothers-in-law. In Christmas Lights, Howard and Colin compete and constantly attempt to outdo each other in their yuletide decorations. So popular were the characters, in fact, that the series itself spawned a one-season spinoff Northern Lights, that followed the men's familial misadventures above and beyond the holiday season. Its sequel, the two-season series City Lights (2007-8) shifts settings entirely; it begins with the men witnessing a gangland shooting. After their houses are set on fire, they and their wives are entered into Britain's federal witness protection program, assigned new identities, and relocated to London.
