Cyrano de Bergerac [Blu-ray]

Rostand's 17th-century romantic play Cyrano De Bergerac is a classic tragedy of unrequited love and also a cautionary tale about the dangers of taking love at face value. It has made it to the screen several times, but this version--directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau and starring Gerard Depardieu as the lovesick poet/soldier with the enormous nose and Anne Brochet as the bright but shallow Roxane, the object of his affection--is the finest. Though it is fairly easy to turn the tragicomic, selfless Cyrano into a caricature, Depardieu, in a turn that earned him an Oscar nomination, creates a three-dimensional character with genuine feelings and foibles.
