The Last Boy Scout

"The package for The Last Boy Scout on DVD proclaims it as a ""guilty pleasure."" Unfortunately, the fact that the film does not look as good as it should and that it lacks supplements takes some of the pleasure out of the DVD. While it does have an impressive remastered Dolby 5.1 Surround track, the picture quality is surprisingly weak. It is rare that a DVD will have a better sound than picture, and in this case the great Dolby track just makes the poor picture more noticeable. Presented in an anamorphic 2.35:1 aspect ratio (the flip side includes the pan-and-scan version), the transfer looks as if no attempt was made to give the video a similar upgrade as the audio. Through most of the movie, the print looks overly hazy, grainy, and dull, like a bad print. Thankfully, the quality of the sound will make acceptable viewing for most action fans. There are no extra supplements except for an unusual amount of trailers and some production notes. The Last Boy Scout is an early DVD release from Warner, and while it will have viewers' walls rattling, more attention should have been paid to the quality of the video transfer."
