The Woman in Brown

Based on the play The Burning Bush by Herald and Geza Herczeg, Woman in Brown was inspired by a true story. In 19th century Vienna, five Jews are put on trial for murder. Attorney Conrad Nagel believes in the Jews' innocence, and also accepts their story that the "victim" committed suicide. Once in court, must overcome prejudice and bigotry-both from the public sector and from the judicial system itself--to see that justice is properly served. One of the few worthwhile filmic efforts of Billy Wilder's brother W. Lee Wilder, Woman in Brown was originally released as The Vicious Circle
