One of the most famous of all early television pundits, David Susskind pioneered the intellectual talk format, making him a precursor to Dick Cavett and Charlie Rose. He began in the 1950s, with a local program in New York City called Open End, that featured prolonged cerebral discussions with noted public figures on subjects ranging from organized crime to civil rights and popular culture. Episodes did away with a standard length, often running simply until the guests became tired and decided to bring the curtain down. Later, Susskind's program (retitled The David Susskind Show) was reduced to two hours. It ran a whopping 29 years, until Susskind's death in 1987. This installment from 1966 features Mary Tyler Moore chatting with Susskind; it was filmed immediately after The Dick Van Dyke Show ended. The actress discusses her return to New York City with husband Grant Tinker, her opinions on contemporary television, and more. Later, Hollywood astrologer Katherine De Jersey turns up and speculates on Moore's future according to the cosmos.
