Kayla is smart, curious, and somewhat sheltered. When her grandmother's church is set ablaze during her family's summer vacation to Montgomery, a modern day hate crime unfolds, and Kayla finds herself caught between the past and the present. Seeing Granny Kat uncharacteristically weakened by anger and an influx of memories, Kayla convinces her grandmother to draw strength from storytelling. Granny Kat, infamous for her enthralling tales, recalls a story she once told about her church, Hope A.M.E., set in 1963. Kayla and her older sister, Jackie, find themselves captivated by Joy Goode, a mysterious character who manages to stir the Hope community. As history unfolds and reveals itself right in front of Kayla and Jackie's eyes, they are determined to connect the past to the present. Together, the two sisters dig through Hope's history, looking for connections between reality and Granny Kat's imagination. What they find changes their perceptions of their family as they stumble upon a chilling secret that runs deep and leaves them wondering just how real Joy Goode is.
