Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

"Screenwriter Gore Vidal's short adaptation of Dr. Jeykll & Mr. Hyde seems custom made for a theatrical stage, but this cheesy Acme Video release positions the story as a fun television diversion for late night horror viewing. The full frame black-and-white image is somewhat blurrly and lacks contrast, but it's not the worst video transfer of all time. One could say that it's appropriately creepy, even if Vidal's script can't always keep pace with its fuzzy distortions and shadows. The sound isn't as dynamic as one would hope, but it's more than acceptable for a low budget production from 1955. There's no problem discerning dialogue, and Jerry Goldsmith's simplistic score is clear.
