The Beachcomber

Based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham, this film focuses on slovenly remittance man Charles Laughton, who drinks and wenches away his monthly allowance in the picturesque Dutch Islands. Elsa Lanchester plays the prim sister of sanctimonious missionary Tyrone Guthrie, who slowly regenerates the wastrel Laughton.
